Why have a Consultation?

Lets talk about consultations, and why they are recommended here at Maywood Counselling. Consultations are a 15 minute appointment that allows both the client and the therapist to ensure they are a good fit.

For some folks, this first appointment can feel intimidating and overwhelming, especially if this is a new experience for you. Consultations allow us to explore your “why”. I have often told individuals that a consultation almost feels like an interview for you, to see if the therapist on the other end is a good fit for your therapeutic needs. The therapist you choose to move forward with; will be the person that you engage in conversations with that may be rooted in discomfort and vulnerability. This is why it is extremely important you match with a therapist that you feel comfortable with; knowing relationship building and trust takes time.

Below are some prompts to spark and guide your thought processing. Remember, the purpose of the initial consultation is to decipher whether you believe you can build a meaningful relationship with the therapist on the other end of the call.

Things to think about before your consultation:

  • What are some of my goals for counselling

  • Why am I seeking therapy

  • What is important to me when looking for a therapist.

  • What is my idea or expectation of therapy

Questions to ask in your consultation:

  • What qualifications do you have?

  • What modalities do you use?

  • Do you have experience providing therapy to the same presenting concerns as mine?

  • Can you provide me with information regarding payment, insurance, and cancellation policies?

  • Do you give ‘homework’ at the end of sessions?

  • How important is my past experience to you?

  • Do you attend any form of supervision?

  • What happens if something comes up and you feel it is not within your scope?

  • Do you offer crisis services?
